Pines 2017

In 2011, Pinestock was rebranded as Pines. This was in response to the continuous complaints students had about Pinestock and the skyrocketing prices for booking bands. The event was now a daylong celebration with no concert or headlining artist. ’11 Pines occurred on April 30th. The day included the Fruit at the Finish Triathlon, a campus-wide BBQ, an All School Talent Show, a Hip-Hop Contest, and a performance by the winner of Battle of the Bands. Attention Starved Children and Johnnie Blend also performed. There was a “beer garden” in Brother Willie’s Pub. The day finished with a street dance inside due to poor weather. Previous years had 18% of the student body attend, but with the change to Pines, 40-50% attended.

’12 Pines had Matthew “Mat” Kearney performing on April 28, 2012, at Clemens Stadium. Cris Cab opened and there were talent show performances and the winner of Battle of the Bands. ’13 Pines had scheduled Sammy Adams, a rapper to perform, but the concert was canceled due to controversy surrounding the performer.

Andy Grammer was set to headline ’14 Pines but ultimately had to drop to perform at a career-advancing opportunity. Instead, The Mowgli’s headlined on May 3rd, at Clemens Stadium. Aaron Carter opened for them, and a few student bands played.

The ’15 Pines featured Nico and Vinz on April 25th. The openers were student bands and Tyler Ward. For ’16 Pines, Timeflies was chosen to perform on April 22nd. There was also an obstacle course and on the next day, the Electric Pines Lazer Dance was housed at the Haehn Campus Center (HCC).

On April 29th, ’17 Pines occurred, with the headliner Echosmith. Along with the Pines name change, the Battle of the Bands transformed into The Voice competition. In 2017, a new duo of juniors Billy Brandecker and Patrick Strom won and opened for Echosmith.

The ’18 Pines started on April 27th with Blues & BBQ and a Painted Pines Dance. On Saturday, the day of the concert, there was the PRP Triathlon, a Johnnie Blend Concert, Leaps & Beats, the headliner Lupe Fiasco, and Post-Pines Pancakes. Jack Fitzpatrick a SJU junior won The Voice competition and got to open for Lupe.

On March 15, 2019, JEC sponsored a concert by local rock band Guytano, at the end of which they announced that Neon Trees would be the headliner for ’19 Pines. Neon Trees’ songs include “Animal” and “Everybody Talks.” On April 27th, the 40th year of Pines was celebrated with an electric theme. There were also 40 days of giveaways leading up to the concert. The Electric Pines Dance, featured Harmony, a campus-started group.
