Cyril Paul, from Trinidad, was first a police officer in the Bahamas before coming to attend SJU in his mid-20s.  In addition to being a star athlete, Paul was a successful musician.   He formed a Calypso band (the Junkaroos) that played around Central Minnesota. Minnesota Public Radio reports "Cyril Paul's introduction to the Minnesota music scene came in 1958. Residents were celebrating 100 years of statehood and planners arranged a talent show at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Seven students from St. John's University calling themselves the Latin American Combo - Cyril Paul and six white guys - took first prize."  After graduating Paul continued his musical career for the next sixty years.  His band, Cyril Paul and the Calypso Monarchs, became widely known throughout the Midwest for their lively Carribean music.

Fellow alum Dan Chouinard ('86) interviewed Cyril Paul in 2020 for St. Joan of Arc Church.
