The Music Scene at SJU

Tonic Sol-fa.pdf

Music has also been a consistent element of Saint John's social environment.    From outdoor concerts to popular dance bands to music festivals, music has been in both the foreground and background of student life  -- and for some alumni, it's been the start of a career in the arts.    This exhibit looks beyond the classroom to provide a glimpse of SJU's music scene over the decades.

Women and Religion at CSB/SJU

MotherWillibalda.jpg

Inspired by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict, faculty and students have long affirmed women's role in religion, questioned women's exclusion from ordination, and explored women's spirituality.  This exhibit traces some of the ways Saint Benedict's women have led the exploration of women's full participation in religious traditions.

Gender Equity Advocacy at CSB

Eileen O Toole and Betty Friedan[57] copy.jpg

Since 1913, the College of Saint Benedict has pushed the boundaries imposed on women. Students, staff, faculty, and guest speakers have spoken out about changes nedded to achieve gender equity.  From an 1888 student debate on the question “Ought the right of suffrage be extended to women?” to 2021 campus demonstrations against sexual harassment, discussions about women's rights have echoed at both CSB and SJU.    This exhibit explores some of the history that inspires the fight for gender equity that continues today.

Black Voices At CSB/SJU

OAAS 1.jpeg

For nearly a century, Black students, employees and visitors to the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University have been raising their voices, and inspiring white allies to join them.  Their words call our community to live up to our Benedictine values of hospitality, justice, peace, and respect for persons.    This exhibit restores and amplifies those voices as we continue to work toward the common good.

Margret Dietz

MD.ChoreogramSmallBox4-010 450.jpg

Margret Dietz was, briefly, a teacher of dance at the College of Saint Benedict. Educated in dance, art, history, philosophy and music, she survived the Nazis, who had forced her to dance for the troops on the Russian front.  She eventually came to the U.S., where she taught dance at several colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota. In the early 1970s she was a choreographer and a popular teacher of summer dance workshops at Saint Ben’s, where she was instrumental in the establishment of the Choreogram dance troupe. While at Saint Ben’s, in the summer of 1972, Margret suffered a heart attack and died suddenly within days; her devoted students were devastated. With the permission of the Sisters, Margret was buried in the Saint Benedict’s Monastery cemetery. Forty years later, three of her former students published a book, Margret Dietz: A Dancer’s Legacy, and donated all of the Dietz research materials, documents, correspondence, and personal effects in their possession, including some costumes designed, sewn, and worn by Margret, to create the Margret Dietz Collection in the CSB Archives.
