Description

Nuns on the Bus is a group of sisters that belong to the NETWORK, a Catholic social justice lobby group. Their aim was to educate Americans about economic injustices and to encourage governmental officials to promote greater economic justice for all. In the process, the Nuns on the Bus tour highlighted the work of Catholic sisters in serving the poor and advocating for social justice. The group first did a bus tour of the country in 2012 to protest Representative Paul Ryan’s US Budget proposal “Path to Prosperity” which included large spending cuts that would affect the poor and middle classes. In 2013, they toured to grow interest in immigration issues. NETWORK executive director Sister Simone Campbell came to the College of Saint Benedict in 2013 to deliver the Koch Lecture, “The U.S. Economy and "The Faithful Budget". Simone Campbell was the executive director of NETWORK and a member of the Sisters of Social Service. Campbell founded the Nuns on the Bus movement, and has been on the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, CNN, MSNBS, and more to discuss the tours. Campbell was even invited to the Oval office by President Obama to discuss the tour. Nuns on the Bus is also concerned with issues of climate justice, a living wage, and children’s rights. On September 29, 2014, the St. Benedict’s Monastery welcomed the Nuns on the Bus group. In 2016, Simone Campbell was a guest on The Square a podcast, that Eric Fought, St. John’s School of Theology and Seminary alumnus, hosts. The podcast talks about faith and interviews spiritual leaders.
