S. Marie Weisser

Sister Marie (Placid) was born November 2, 1914, in Spring Hill, MN to Frank and Mary (Braun) Weisser. The fourth of 12 children, Marie graduated from Saint Benedict's High School in 1933 and joined the community. She was given the name Placid. In her teens, Sister Marie was moved to pursue her vocation as a nun and entered with her friend Matilda. She began her teaching career in 1934 and taught around Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Washington. She obtained her B.A. in biology in 1960 from the College of St. Benedict. Later she obtained an M.S. in science education in 1965 from Creighton University in Nebraska. She was a gifted teacher in grade schools, high schools, and teaching at the College of St. Benedict and microbiology at the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing.  An impeccable seamstress, she served for 18 years as a manager and a prolific producer in Whitby Gift Shop, transforming a private residence into a gift shop. Later, a grant was received to construct a new gift shop and museum, and gallery. She returned to her baptismal name Marie in 1968. She found beauty and simplicity in her life as a sister, in nature, in her lovely artistic creations, and in her ongoing contact with community, loving family, grateful students, and fellow crafters.
