Birth of the Postcard

October 1, 1869, the Austrian Post Office introduced the Correspondenz-Karte. It was about 3 5/16 x 4 3/4 inches, slightly smaller than what became the standard size postcard. One side of the card was for the address, the other for a message. Postage was half the cost of a letter.
