The CSB/SJU Herbarium
Both the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University established a herbarium early in their development to support instruction in botany. At CSB, Sister Remberta Westkaemper founded the College’s herbarium. A tireless collector herself, Sister Remberta specialized in vascular plants of Stearns County, adding over 600 specimens to the collection. At SJU, Fr. James Hansen established natural history collections, including mosses, ferns, and flowering plants that became the foundation of the Herbarium at Saint John’s. After the CSB and SJU Biology Departments merged, the CSB Herbarium was integrated with SJU collections under the direction of Dr. Nick Zaczkowski. Dr. Stephen Saupe became director of the Bailey Herbarium in 1994.
