High School
Kubasaki High School is a U.S. Department of Defense school serving military dependents in Okinawa. In the 1960s, school officials tried to recreate the experience of a mainland U.S. school. There were opportunities for extracurricular activities such as drama performances and student newspapers, and athletics were as prominent as in any American school. While students were largely isolated from the local Okinawan population for their academic lives, some like the photographer enjoyed exploring new territory. Kubasaki High School currently serves approximately 700 students in grades 9-12 whose families represent all military branches and Department of Defense civilians.
